I have just overdosed my alk! Do I need to worry or do anything? It's at 15.

I did that one day, od'd my alk it was off the test kit, and just kind of ignored it till I noticed my cleaner shrimp walking around like he was suffocating. It then took me about 15 gal of water change to get the alk back down to where I could test it and not be overly high (like back down to readable levels). Everything seemed fine after that. However, my alk was off the chart (like up in the 20's). SO I would recommend that you do a water change and bring it down a little bit, but just watch your inverts for a few hours.

Umm... can you add calcium to balance it out? Too much alk is going to spike your pH pretty high... isn't it?

You are in zone three. It discussed adding calcium and if the problem is extreme, doing water changes.

Jeff, I wouldnt lose any sleep over it, it will come down . Mine is usually at about 13-14 all the time trying to keep my ph up.

15 dKH? kinda high, but I would just wait it out like Brad suggests. Shut down any balanced additive systems (kalkwasser, calcium reactor, bionic, etc.) and just add CaCl2 (turbo calcium) until it drops down to where you want to maintain it.

So if I add calcium the alk. will drop? If I do that won't the calcium be too high?

I think Jon means add calcium to maintain youre desired calcium level, not to bring down the alk.

yes, what brad said.

If you were to do nothing and let the alk drop down to 10 dKH, the calcium would drop by 40 ppm. So add that 40 ppm back and then go back to what you were doing before, only back off on the additions a little. BTW, what are using for calcium/alk?

I'm using bionic 2 part but i tested my alk yesterday and it was way low so i got some kent buffer .

Jeff, I use bionic also and every sunday like now, after I do my water change I add one big tablespoon of kent superbuffer to my overflow to get the alk back up because I'm using Oceanic salt. (I do mix the buffer with water first) Then I test and usually skip a couple of days untill I need to add bionic. Hope this helps.
