Is is possible for a tank to hold a consistant magnesium level? I keep checking my mag level and haven't had to dose for nearly 2 months. I'm starting to think I may have a bad test kit. (Red Sea)
Nothing appears wrong with the tank, it is a mature tank with rock over 4 years old.

Yes, for a while. I have had tanks I didn't need to dose Mg for 6 months or more. It depends on what coral are kept. Is Coralline Algae growing? What level is the Mg?

Thanks Mark

At the start of December I had the Mag level at 1000-1100. At the end of Dec. I noticed it climbing and it was aroud 1500 at that time, so I cut the dosing in half and it seemed to stablize a little. I thought! Then around the end of Jan. it tested at 1780, so I stopped all dosing on Jan 24. It has slowly fallen but only 0010 to 0020 every week or two. It seemed to settle at 1400 - 1440 around the first of April and has stayed the same. Back in Dec. I had Coralline Algae growing on the glass, but I think the high level of Mag. has kinda stopped it. Like I said, I'm not too concerned right now....or should I be? I just figured I will keep monitoring it.

An important rule of reefkeeping is to dose only what is needed as it is needed to keep levels within range.
Testing is key.
The acceptable Mg range is about 1200-1400 ppm so it's good now.
Growth comes and goes depending on an assortment of things.
Enjoy
Big smile
