Hey I could use a little help, I have a 14g biocube and I put some chaeto in the back on Saturday with a 10w 6500k light shining through the back since I put it in most of my corals especially my zoas have not opened up, does anyone know of any conflict between chaeto and corals? Or have any other ideas? Kinda worried. Checked pretty much all levels. Calcium was pretty high don't know if that matters, alkalinity was on the low side but not bad. I've lost my tyree space monsters and a chunk of favia, who knows what's next. The only thing i can really think of is that the chaeto spiked some bacterial growth or reaction. Anybody help?

Did that cheato come with some "bad" pests?  Or have you recently added something to the tank that could have come with some pests?  Have you tried dipping your corals?

I added the chaeto and the space monsters and some RIC all at the same time from the same place but I don't know if they have bad stuff on them or not. Took the chaeto out 2 days ago, put the space monsters in my other tank hoping they might pull through

Also salinity? How long has the tank been up and running? Pictures would help. It's not pests..its water parameters and quality.

Can you share the advice here?  That would help others that may have similar experiences.

Yes of course! So i've been using reef crystals salt for a while now and ive been using building blocks for added nutrients. Well I think the building blocks were dissolving too fast anyway and then once i started using Oceanic salt, that is when it all of a sudden started having problems because (and I dont understand why they dont fix this problem with their salt) it is low in alkalinity buffers and very high in calcium so if you use it without adding buffers your salt becomes like mine.. low alk and high calcium and then your pH go's out of whack which of course pisses off your corals. So I just did a BIG water change, like half my tank with some basic "Natures ocean" salt and that put things back in line, now my corals are slowly opening back up. The only thing that im still waiting that may not make it are my blasto's. I trust Eric when he says that Oceanic is a good salt but you have to understand that it is low in Alkalinity buffers so everytime you mix salt your going to have to add buffers to it. So I guess moral of the story is... too much of a good thing can be bad. And make sure you know what you are putting in your tank dont just assume the manufacturers have figured it all out for you.
