So, after debating on the type of lights we want for our tank, we almost bought the $200 lights at fish4u, however, it seems we are going to upgrade our tank to a 55gallong with a stand, that is if all goes well, my question is, this will be a perfect hight to stick in the living room next to a window, this window gets really good light, how well would this work?? Has anyone tried it? (I would assume crazy Adam has) I have tried looking and have seen posts about skylights working well, but how about just in front of the window with low wattage lights on top for good measure?

Have you ever seen Mark's tank? Thats what he does. I'd talk to him about the pros and cons. I'm sure he can give you some good advice.
As I remember right, he sight has two VHO's on the tank also. But I'd pm, or just wait. I'm sure he'll see this topic soon enough.

Vidar-
Yep had a few tanks in front of windows.  Love it.  You don't get the nice color and "fake" aquarium look that everyone seems to like.  But for people like me, it is awesome looking.  The last window tank I had was my tide pool tank.  I can't remember if there are pics on this site of it or not.
Anyway, I love window light, it increases aglae and coral growth, but your tank won't have those nice colors of vho and halide.

Exactly what I was thinking

Couldn't you add some actinics for some coloration? It wouldn't take anything away from the natural light, right? Plus you would get some better color.

Awsome!!  I knew Adam would have been the one to try it!! :)

Well this is what we will do then! It will save us some money for now, and then when we move and can get a really large tank we can have the fake look :)

Thanks for everyones advice, I love this group :)  (yes we will be members, just waiting till the 7th to pay up! )

Also forgive my very poor spelling and grammer, star made me eat sushi for lunch and that always makes me lazy ;)

Hello everyone,

I thought that the "fake" color was the real color some of these animals experience. It's my understanding that most sps and some other animals are collected realitively close to the surface where they could experience a more yellow light (6500K bulbs are commonly recommended for them). But correct me if I'm wrong here,. I thought the blue/purple lights emmulate the color filtering caused by deeper water. Hence, I always thought they represnted a "real" look as well.

Thanks,
Chris
