I was at Costco today and saw a bag of ice melt called "safestep 7300 calcium chloride" My question here is has anyone tried it instead of "heat"? It was $20 for a 40 lb bag. I've used their Magnesium Chloride ice melt for magnesium with no ill effects.

| sometimes you can look on the bag/box and it will have a registered chemical analysis reference that you can look up on the EPA or similar site. It would tell you what is in there and the abundance of each trace element if it was tested for it. Best way to see. |

MSDS can be found online. The MSDS for Safestep Extreme 7300 by North American Salt/Compass Minerals in Overland Park KS, says it's 60-100% Calcium Chloride and gives no other ingredient information. By comparison the MSDS for Peladow Premier by Dow Chemical in Midland MI, gives the following: Calcium Chloride 90-92% Water 4-6% Potassium Chloride 2-3% Sodium Chloride 1-2% I just bought a gallon jug of Peladow at Home Depot for $8. It mixed up totally clean and clear. By comparison, the last time I bought Peladow, it left a pink tinged residue. Though the resulting Ca solution caused no problems in my reefs back then, it's clear to me that this years batch is superior. | Mark, could you possibly post a pic of the one you are using? I have been using prestone driveway heat and while I haven't had any problems with it, it does mix up with a little residue in the bottom of the jug. |

I use the prestone heat as well and haven't had any problems with it. |

Just looked again at the jug. Prestone Driveway Heat is what I bought.  Sorry, I wasn't paying attention. I've used several brands over the years, even a Walmart brand that went on clearance at the end of the season for $2/jug. That might have been the one that left a pink residue. I used just the clear liquid and it worked fine. Aloha, Mark The MSDS for Drievway Heat says <1% of water, sodium chloride, potassium chloride and strontium chloride.
