I've never seen a 55 without a tempered bottom. I would be careful with that. The front, back and sides are most likely not tempered. So I would drill one of those. 40's are about the largest I've seen without tempered glass.

Side should be great. Stay at least 2" from any edge and you shouldn't have any problem. Just go super slow while drilling and keep water running over it the entire time. If you think it's taking forever then your probably still going too fast. I also take some of that dense blue form from home depot and put that on the inside. Then use a board or something to hold it against the back of where you are drilling. That way when you start to cut through the last little bit of glass it will hold the cut piece in place and reduce any chipping.

It's just a solid foam board that it normally used for insulating foundations of houses or put behind siding on houses. It's normally blue or pink in color. It's not the white stuff that is made out of beads all pressed together. It's a little harder than that white beaded stuff. You can usually find a scrap piece on a construction site that will work. Just check with the builder before you take anything. They have always been very nice to me when I need stuff.
