Topics for discussion at the August meeting:

- What are Microfauna and Meiofauna? Are they a good thing and if so, how do we encourage their growth?

- Shouldn't water quality for all reef fish be as good as on the reefQuestion

- Is it true that coral filter the same water that the fish are polluting?

- What hardy varieties of coral can be kept with predatory fishQuestion

- Which is better, natural biofiltration or mechanical/chemical filters?

- What is the value of Macroalgae like Caulerpa and ChaetomorphaQuestion

- How can a hobbyist grow their own LS and LR using terrestrial "fossilized" LR and can this calcium carbonate rock and sand be found near the reef or even in Utah?

- How can a simple glass box of water be just as beautiful as an expensive tank that uses sophisticated equipmentQuestion

To me how to do it cheaper and showing successful examples is a big part of it.  Not everyone runs a skimmer or expensive dosing options, you can overcome that in other ways.  Sometimes people like those items and it helps but seeing different examples and perspectives is really neat.

Kind of like with Reef Tour, seeing great tanks and having them all run differently!

Maybe something on an inexpensive, easy, responsible way to set up a tank quickly!

I can't wait for your discussion!

There are many unique perspectives on reefkeeping. I hope we can have an interactive discussion regarding how hobbyists are doing beautiful reef aquariums in an economical way.

Ideas for additional topics? Please post your ideas here.

Aloha,
Mark  Hug

This doesn't really go with your current topics, but I would love for someone to come out and talk about parameters.  We have a lot of people who are knew who don't know how to do this and don't understand it.   It would be cool to have someone talk about water parameters.  have some people bring in samples from their tanks.  show HOW to test, what tests are good, and what the heck they actually mean.  And if the tests are off how to correct any issues before they become huge issues.... ill think of more ideas if you want :D

Topics about diseases would be cool. like velvet, ich etc.  what they are,  how to identify them how to correct them if possible etc.

another topic could be clean up crews,  whats does what, whats beneficial, why have them, do certain things clean better in regards to glass, rock, sand.

Want me to keep going? don't want to be annoying or overloading lol

Keep it up. Those are exactly the sort of things many of us hope will be the major content of future monthly meetings.

Most of those topics will be touched upon during the discussion in August. Setting up an inexpensive yet beautiful reef aquarium is futile if it crashes. We will discuss how to keep it looking beautiful without having to do a lot of maintenance or having to empty our wallet.

Mark  Hug
