| I got a 20 gallon rubbermade container that's food grade so I can do larger water changes. I have ro/di running into it right now. However... I'm not very trusting. I've rinsed it out numerous times with hot water. What are the chances there's some chemical in it that will wipe out the tank? |

Quite low. I wash mine with dish soap and rinse it well. Used to be that manufacturers; rubbermaid, sterilite, etc., left the "mold release' chemicals on their products. Mold release chemicals are special soaps/oils that allow the tub to detach from the hot injection mold. Partly in response to hobbyists complaints and for consumer safety, they added a final step of washing off those chemicals. These days I sometimes forget but it doesn't seem to matter if I forget to give it a quick wash in soapy water and a rinse with plain water. Back when sump-Refugiums were a new idea I used these tubs, sometimes reinforced so they didn't bow and now I use tubs all the time for holding tank water with fish, coral, LR, etc. Aloha, Mark.

| I use the 20 gallon brute cans. I wash with Dawn every few weeks and call it good. You should be fine! |

| Watch your TDS on that if you decide to leave the water in there for more than a few hours. I had a Rubbermaid 20g and I found my tank started going funky. I tested the TDS and kept wondering why it was over 10 even after ro filter changes. Then I tested the water going into it which was 0, then tested it every day for a few days and each day, it went up. I trashed that trash bin and purchased a brute 20 g (surprisingly made by the same company) and it has not had any issues in the past year. This has been an issue for others in the past (online) with the regular Rubbermaid and not the brute. Keep your eye on it! |

That's right, it's come up here on the forum before. Thanks Paul for reminding us. On the other hand, the Sterilite tubs are a different formulation of plastic, so they don't leach anything, that I know of. That's why they worked as part of my system, pictured above.
