My ss star is having a problem.  I have had him for two years now with no trouble. Now he is loosing his legs a bit at a time.   Will said he may not be getting enough food.  Carl posted about using an anti fungal cream.  I'll try that and I also took him out of the main tank and put him into a container with frozen phyto to see if he would eat that.  Anyone have any ideas to help me not loose him?  I feed pretty heavy for the fish and coral and only have a few snails but a lot of crabs in the tank.  There are also some bristle worms.  I don't have anything else that moves through the sand.  I lost the jawfish a couple of months ago.  I don't general see many copopods in or on the sand.

Sand Sifting Stars are murder on sand beds. I'm not happy to read that it is dieing but now that you have come here with the problem, please don't buy another one for a long time. If after two years you feel you must have one, keep it for a few months then give it to another large tank for a few months, and so on.

For the record, Jawfish are also murder on sand beds. I strongly suspect it also died of starvation.

Personally, I prefer cucumbers. They don't seem to eat as much of the life in the sand, they move slower eating less...

My 2 cents.

Why do you say that they are murder on sandbeds when I  have read and been told that they help the sand bed? As to what I have been told they clear out dead spots and help keep things running right.

Sand Sifting Stars are accused of eating sand-bed organisms that are said to be beneficial to the tank
