 Topic: recirculating skimmer?

I have been looking at a bunch of different skimmers for the 125 gal im setting up, and came across some recirculating skimmers. I dont know much about them. Does anyone use them? And do any of you run your overflow drain directly to it? How do you like them?

I use them all the time. I personally like them if your on a budget. One your pumps are up higher on some models so you don't get large particles stuck in them. I have a few hooked up to overflow. I thought I might have some problems with large particles that would go down the overflow box but all of them have run smooth and the bottom stays clean and the pumps look good after a year. Oh this is on a Reef Octopus DDNW-150 rated for 350 gallons.

i was lookin at the reef octo's too. they seem like a pretty good deal for what you get. would i have enough flow with two overflows on my 125 going to it? or do you think i would be better off running another pump?

im not really sure. the guy i bought the setup from said it was a pond type of pump. he said he used it cause he wanted a stronger flow from the returns. i havent really looked to closely at it yet, or messed with it. not sure if i will use it or not..

Pond type. Mag Pumps. I like them a lot. IMHO I think you get the most bang for your buck with Mag pumps.

i looked at the pump last night and its a flotec waterfall pump. didnt give a model name, just a long number. says it is 4/10 hp and made in italy.

That would give you plenty of power off the overflow for the skimmer. What model of skimmer are you looking to run?

The first one is the # 4 rated at 125 gals, and the other is a # 6 rated at 180. im not sure which one I want to do yet. Im thinking i might just want to cry once and do the bigger one and just have it incase i ever go bigger. What do you guys think?

Well I always super size mine just so I can have more fish in the tank. Just ask tileman how big he went on the skimmer. Smaller skimmer = less fish. Bigger skimmer = more fish.
