Adam,
Have you written an article about your preferrences on these types of
things? I'm interested in more details about the hows and whys of
certain setups. How they got their names.
Thanks
Has anyone heard how the guy in Utah County is doing with the new Skimmerless system?

Nope, but if you'd like I can make that my next article (right after Suzy's seahorse article). In fact I think I will.

I personally enjoy our system without a skimmer.
I can see even on my 29 gallon the oils & gross stuff that a skimmer would remove... so for a larger system where you're sticking your hands in often and have more fish, I can definitely understand why you would need it..
but with our back-hanging filter (even without the filters in it), it pushes a lot of stuff back into the water, and when gunk becomes too much (or I've had more deaths recently), we add the filter back in, and it cleans up the tank within an hour or so, but I don't think it will remove all of the healthy biology. We are planning on keeping that method instead of investing in a rather pricey sump & skimmer for a while and see how it works in the 55.
Okay.. now to go look up what a sump is...

I would love to try a skimmer, Suzy! how big? it would be great to put it on teh 55 gallon & compare the results to the 29 gallon. do some experimenting. :-)
yes, deaths are very rare. With the lighting in my 29 gal, mostly just xenia & one damsel have been lost... so far.... (insert dooming music & shifty eyes)

Well, I have a skimmer.....always have. So is it possible to overskim a tank? Should I only run my skimmer a couple hours a day? Right now I run my skimmer 24/7 & also dump onto a bag of carbon. Do you all think I should reduce the amount of time that I skim??

Turbosnail,
I used to think that it was possible to overskim, but I'm changing my mind. I don't think its possible to overskim (within reason). I would leave your skimmer running 24/7. You could possibly cut back on the carbon to every other week ??...

Is this just like people making the comment you can't have too much light, and then freaking out about the post about 30+ watts/gallon. Nobody really freaked out but it was funny!
I'd say yes, you can overskim but if your smart you wouldn't buy/use a skimmer that was rated too high for your water volume, tank inhabitants and rock mass but don't listen to me I'm a punk with huge tank envy!

I am thinking about a skimmer for my 30 gal with 10 gal sump. Are there skimmers out there rated for this size of load? I am looking for something effective, but with a small foot print. Any suggestions?
Thanks,

I've got an ASM G 1x(rated for 150 gl)on a total of about 80 true gallons of water... well, as of tomorrow I will, but the DIY I've had running seems to work really well with a smaller fish load and less frequent feedings. The majority of coral in my 55 display is sps(acros, montis' etc) and growth is awesome, but with the larger fishload, there are some signs of cyano that is gone as soon as the go out, but still is an annoyance.

Overskimming? A skimmer is sometimes spoken of as though it is something that just needs to be big enough and all your maintenance worries will disappear. "Problem with the tank" "Get a bigger skimmer." is often heard. The full term "Protein Skimmer" seems to have been forgotten. You should know that there are harmful chemical compounds a skimmer cannot do anything about.

This unsightly film on the top of the water is often mostly just algae scum. Don't be misled into thinking that either of your tanks absolutely need a skimmer.
And for what it's worth, in my visit I saw no problems whatsoever with your aquariums.
But I do have one recommendation for you and for everyone that runs their tank without a refugium. Grow some macroalgae like Caulerpa and Chaetomorpha in the aquarium. This is a very important part of filtration that is too often overlooked.
If a Tang or Rabbitfish eats the macroalgae as fast as it is added, then make an area or basket where the fish can't get at it, or consider a`refugium.
Also, use activated carbon from time to time. AC does a good portion of what a skimmer does and a little bit more.
