I think piston said it best.  I leave mine on all the time, that way I don't have one more timer to worry about.

I keep mine on all the time (that way I won't forget to turn it on)  Mine's on an 18 gallon and everybody seems happy.

As far as I've seen and heard it doesn't matter. If you want to get exact, there are moonlight software programs that exactly replicate the moon cycle from Full Moon to New Moon, including those nights when the moon is absent because it was up during the day. Until we see more evidence of SPS coral spawning in our aquariums, the main purpose for moonlights seems to be for the look and fun of it!
I'm surprised that in your research you didn't discover this information.

I am going to say it doesnt matter. The main purpose of the moon light is for the hobbiest to enjoy his tank at night. The only other benifit I have heard is that it can keep your fish from jumping out. I recently purchased a moon light for my 20 Gal Nano Reef Tank. During the day I run a 96 W PC light. I have done some reading and some say that you should have one hour of darkness before turning on the moon lights. Others have said to keep both day and moon lights running together for an hour before turning off the day lights. And others say to immediately turn on the moon lights when the day lights go off.
