    <![CDATA[<strong>Author:</strong> <a href="http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=3428">ReefdUp</a><br /><strong>Subject:</strong> 59684<br /><strong>Posted:</strong> October&nbsp;15&nbsp;2012 at 8:19pm<br /><br />Exactly - there are many species of coral that look pretty much identical on the surface, and without having bare dry skeleton and (sometimes) knowing where the coral came from, it may be impossible to get a 100% ID.<br /><br />Just like the whole naming insanity with corals, many wholesalers, LFS, and divers mis-ID the corals, or just genericize them.  To further complicate matters, corals (and other creatures) are recategorized all the time as well (like acanthophyllia dehayesiana was several different names before its current ID.)  ]]>

In fact, to get a positive ID between those three it would take killing a piece of the coral for a skeletal analysis...and even then it would be difficult.  Please consult Veron's Corals of the World for more information on this.]]>
