I found this link:

http://geology.utah.gov/utahgeo/rockmineral/collecting/oolit ic.htm

And wondered if the directions at the bottom would take me to a good location to fill a 55gallon?  I'll be shooting for about a 4" DSB.

Whatcha think?

Evidently, you have not read this thread. It will answer that question and a lot more.

Chris,

That place is pretty used up.  You may want to head out onto Stansbury Island and go out those dirt roads until you find sand dunes.  Take Mark's pictures to ID the sand.  We went out about 17 miles but that wasn't all necessary -- however I thought that further away from the highway and frequently traveled dirt road made for cleaner sand.  It isn't just in one place but do be sure you have the right sand by its round ball shape and that it will bubble in vinegar.

If you wait until its a little warmer and drier there will be a group going.  (I'm one to talk as I dug my sand out from under snow.)

Excellent info.  No, I had not read that thread.

When will a group be going, and will it be announced on here?

If it is dry this weekend, I would be happy to go on Saturday for I need some more sand.  You can drive close to the rock in a two wheel drive vehicle if it is dry.  The sand drys quickly so if there is no rain Wed thru Fri we should be good to go.  The sand is easy to get to and I found a place where you won't even have to screen it, only wash it.

I won't be able to go until the semester's up...  Maybe if I take Mark to Taco Bell or something I can have his trained eye along for the trip.  :)

That is fine.  I live out in Lake Point which is on the way to the island and have a pretty flexible schedule so just let me know if you would like me to take you.
