I still can't get my durso pipe to stop from "flushing". I've tried drilling additional holes or covering them up and adjusting the height. Any ideas? What's the relationship of the height of the durso to the overflow? If it's too low than I have about 2" of dead space at the top of my tank which just looks ugly. | Does the tank still have the insert i made to block the overflow slots? I never had to adjust the height of the durso to adjust the water level. How many GPH is your pump? |

When I had the tank, I used the insert to adjust the water level so i didnt need to worry about the durso height. If it no longer stays in place by itself, find someway to jam it into place.
Having it in place won't prevent the flushing of the durso, however. It only controls the water level of the tank. The size of the hole on the top is what you need to worry about now. Put a new cap on the top of the durso and try drilling new holes. Try doing lots of little holes instead of increasing the size of one hole. Use a tiny drill bit (1/32" maybe). This way you can plug some if you drill too many. |

Ok. I discovered part of the problem. I turned one of the pumps off and everything's quiet as a mouse now and works perfectly. Do I have too much flow going through the overflow? My thought is low flow through the overflow/sump and a closed loop for flow. ------------- |

| I agree also, closed loop for the second pump. If you don't want to drill then the pipe go over the back but not in the overflow as this will cause you issues. |

Dang. I wish I would have thought to ask that earlier. There's no way I'm going to redo the whole setup all over again. Is more flow necessary for SPS's? Is there any way to drill without emptying the whole tank? I've never really understood the whole closed loop thing. Where would I drill? Diagrams or pics would certainly help but I'm probably past that point. I've been studying some diagrams of a close loop and I just have a couple of questions. What's the advantage of doing a closed loop as opposed to me just putting a mag 9 inside the tank behind some rocks and splitting the plumbing so it has outlets in two corners? Is the only advantage of a closed loop so you can hide the plumbing?
Question 2: If I did a closed loop, can I just set it up like this? http://www.melevsreef.com/closedloop.html except put the pump and the SCWD under the tank in the stand? Would this work with a Mag 9? ------------- Jared Page Highland, UT Graphic Designer |

you could put the mag in the aquascape but the mag pumps tend to heat the water up. that might be the only problem with that. other than if you need to clean the intake screen on the pump you would need to disassemble the rock. ------------- "TANKLESS" |

Yes. More flow is necessary for SPS.
The advantages of a closed loop is there are no powerheads to hide or clean-out. Closed loops have no pump head-loss. You can turn off the main pump when you feed and the CL will circulate the water to distribute food without it going into the sump. The closed loop can be on a different circuit than the main pump so if a circuit goes out you still have some water flow. Yes you can put a pump in the stand and have the inputs and outputs go behind the tank and over the top. I did this on my 120. If you put the pump in the main display it is harder to hide and tougher to get out if it needs to be serviced.
