I now have 8 wrasses in my tank and I think it's time to get something to cover the top of my tank.  Does anyone know where I can get some black or chrome eggcrate?  Has anyone used gutterguard?

Thanks Daren, I'll go and check it out.  I have heard that you can also find it at lighting specialty stores, anyone know where one of these are locally?  Or recommendations?

The "chrome" is actually a plastic coating over the top of white eggcrate. It will flake off. I'm not sure if it is toxic (probably not). But it does flake off if you cut or bend the eggcrate.

Who knows, you might consider it "color enhancing" additive to you fishes' diet!

Post some pics of what ever you decide. BTW, light through the eggcrate is significantly reduced. I read an article ... let me see if I can find it.

EDIT: ok, I guess I wasn't entirely correct - and it may be the jury is still out. I'd suggest you talk with our guest next month about it!

I just picked up 3 more wrasses yesterday and so far all of my wrasses have not fought. My mystery harrassed my flame for a day or so but nothing to terrible, now they are fine.  The Labouti  I just got seems completely at home and is out and about looking for food  The red margin is still timid and I get to see him every now and again, and the black leopard burried in the sand right after acclimation and I haven't seen him yet.  I lost one flame last month due to jumping and I don't want this to happen again (TOO expensive and sad)  I think it was cornered in the small side of my tank (left side) and jumped to escape, I have that side covered now , but I still worry about the rest of the tank because everyone says that sooner or later they will try to fly.
Is ther other options out there? Or should I just take my chances.

That's not what I wanted to hearOuch.   I also heard that moonlights are good to have in keeping them wet.  Anyone else?
Dion, do you think that you lost alot of your light useing eggcrate?  Shane mentioned it and that's not good for me.  If you still lose fish and lose light, then I better come up with something else.

I don't think I lost any light. There is an up-side and a down-side to the eggcrate. the thinner side of the dividers goes up so the light is directed downward and less light is blocked. I had to wash mine occasionally due to salt creep.

Thanks Mike,  I like hearing thatCool.  So there is a certain side that goes up and down?  That's good to know also. Anything else? Has anyone seen black anywhere?

I've looked for black for some time, even had a thread on it here maybe a year or so ago.  I hear it's available in other parts of the country.  As far as wrasses jumping from an open tank goes, I think it's a question of when, not if they'll jump.   One question, though- why not just white eggcrate?  If your tank is as tall as mine, you wouldn't see it.  I guess if it's not very tall, it would be kinda weird.  I don't think black would look any better, and wouldn't reflect light like the chrome or white stuff.

Brad,

There is an up side and a down side to the egg crate. Read through the thread I posted a link to above. It will explain things a lot better.

I haven't noticed any lost light. I did add moon lights to all tanks since I read info suggesting that it helps the fish see the top of the water. It always amazes me when a wrasse or jaw fish makes it through the EG. I just hope to never find a fish stuck in it.

what about just stretching bridal veil or something across the top? Would that allow more light in? Any drawbacks here?

wouldn't the vinyl screen actually screen the light out?

I think it would matter on the size of the holes. But obviously it would to some extent.
