I just purchased a 260W PC lighting for my 55 gallon tank. On the instruction sheet it says it bold letters "Do not place in a canopy." (I have a canopy). I have a couple of friends who also are running about the same wattage, but their lighting does not have this warning. If I add additional ventilation, will it be okay?

I was about to offer my opinion, but thought better of it. I would say that at least for and grins, I would call the manufacturer and ask why. Is it UL certified? Better to err on the safe side than watch your house go up in smoke.

LOL - I am trying to locate a number for the manufacturer. I have had it on for a full day now (without the canopy), and it gets very warm. I am thinking that maybe I made a bad choice in lighting

Usually the ballast does not go into the canopy unless there is a fan and then some canopies are so closed up they cause serious overheating, even with the ballast outside.
So, in answer to your question, yes hooking up a fan or two for ventilation of the canopy is very wise. The warranty will be void because you didn't heed the warning, but you won't have be blinded to look at your tank.
