I got really lucky and got a very small bright yellow polyp on a piece of rubble rock I bought awhile back, but it is not growing much. I was wondering if there is a way to help these to grow.

I was also wondering how to frag Polythoa, I have about 5 heads on a very small rock and I would like to get them on other rocks so they can multiply more, but don't know how to convience the little guys to jump to another rock. any Ideas?

To help them grow make sure your levels are good including Iodine. To frag them you can place another rock near them and they will grow on to it and they you can use a razor to cut them apart. Make sure to wear gloves so you don't get poisoned. At least wash your hands real well when you are done and don't put them in your eyes or mouth before you do.

Well I don't need to frag them anymore I seem to be loosing them. I have lost 4 polyps in the last week as well as a blue mushroom all attached to the same rock. I have not lost any mushrooms in any other part of the tank but something is getting at everything on this rock. I know I have box snails and my wife and I have been removing them. I havn't tested water recently but last time I checked the only things that were kind of low was kh 7 and ca 400.
Any advice?

I will get levels tested tonight or in the morning. I am really upset now because my yellow polyps have also disappeared and it was in a different tank.

Ok, here is the update in the last week I have lost 6 polyathoa, and one mushroom from the same rock. I still have 5 polyathoa left on the rock.
Data
Temperature 74-78 daily
alk 8-  API used
PH 8.2- I think it is hard to tell with Red sea test kit
NH3- 0.25- Red sea
NO2- 0 Red Sea
NO3- 0 API
CA- 420 API
P04 0 API
salinity1.0235 Instant ocean hydrometer
I added a sand conch a week ago to help with the small hair/cyano outbreak that I am currently experiencing. I have a eclipse filtration system, with bio wheel, there is carbon running. and I have cheato in the tank.
The only other thing I think could be eating them is the box/sundile snails that I have, but I didn't think they would eat mushrooms. It is only this area of the tank that I am loosing soft coral, and the algae is heavier on the other end.

#2 I lost my 2 yellow polyps from my small 5 gallon I have not tested the water but it has box/sundile snails as well
Salinity-1.0222 intant ocean
temp 74-79

Any advice as of what to do next would be helpfull, we have been removing box/sundile snails once every few days when we have time.

Ammonia should be 0. A good growth of algae will eat it up immediately.
Alk ought to be higher. Add two tablespoons of baking soda dissolved in a pint of RO water. Pour in one cup and the other cup an hour later. Check Alk the next day.
You said there is algae heavy on one side of the tank.
Do you have herbivores?
Please post a pic.
Also check the tank several times through the night so you can catch those Sundial snails in action and pull them.

Thanks Mark!Smile
-I am working on the baking soda
-I will get pictures
- As of herbivores, I have emerald crab (who eats my macro algae, and not bubble), we had bi color blenny but he died. We are thinking about getting a tang until it grows to big then we would sell it.
- I will check tank tonight for sundiles
- picture coming tomarow.

Baking soda was added, that is why I think the GSP is not out, I am sure they will get over it. I think my daylight isn't putting out as much as it use to, I may replace it to see if that helps. I will post kh readings tomarow here are a few more pictures. Algae is not getting much better.
It is mostly this green hair algae seen in the corner
Close up of macro, the cyano has been wafted off.
close up of rock where palyathoa and mushroom have been disapearing,

I also think alot of this algae came in when I got my christmas tree rock. It had alot of stuff on it.

Thanks again for the help. I hope the pictures help for information.

KH=14 API
CA=400 API
I have not seen any of these snails near the paly when I have checked the last couple of nights, but I have seen about 50+ in the aquarium. I have seen these snails at the base of the paly in the past, but I would allways remove them. One reason I am not sure if it would be them is I don't think they are known to eat mushrooms, and I had a mushroom disapear off this rock.

That's very high Alk. If you are dosing, it's time to stop for a while and let it fall to ~10 dKH before resuming.
My thought is that you have a Rock Crab eating the coral. These are easy to trap using a piece of raw shrimp in a glass jar leaned at an angle against that rock where the coral are disappearing. The crab slides down into the jar to eat the shrimp but cannot climb back out.

That's a lot of Sundial snails. You are certain they are this kind of snail and that they have been eating coral?

See the Cyano growing on the Chaeto? Looking at the tank pic I'd say that there is not enough turbulent flow. There seem to be two powerheads creating circulation that I can see. Is there another powerhead in the bottom back right corner?

-The snails are small, with very small round hard snails they are smaller than the stomatelas. I have never witnessed them eating the coral before just seen them at the base and have heard that they do eat polyps. I am calling them these type of snails based on pictures I have seen.
-Don't rock crabs eat snails and hermits as well, I have not been missing those. Are rock crabs transparent? I saw a transparent crab in the tank about a month ago that I had never seen before. We have also seen a red crab with white stripe on him.
-I dont know how I will be able to stick a glass jar on the rock but I could put it on the sand leaning up to the rock below it as you suggest.
-I will continue to check kh every day until it falls to 10.
-I have one koralia, and one powerhead in the bottom right as you said, Do you think I need more? Also I have the koralia on a timer of on 2 hours off 1 hour (someone suggested it would help coral growth) I could take it off this timer.

Koralias are bad on timers. they are not made to power up and down like that. They need gradual power ups/downs

The sundial snails I have seen are the size and shape of Astrea snails with a peculiar design on their shell. If the ones you have are not like this then, unless you actually see them eating coral, they should be left alone.

Yes, coral do grow better with more turbulant flow caused by turning powerheads on and off, but a powerhead that isn't running is worse than having the current always going the same direction. The only powerheads I know of that can handle on-off cycles are Maxijet. That's why I use one modified MJ1200 for the excellent way it can totally change the direction of current in my 75 gal which has two other powerheads at each bottom back corner pointing up toward the surface.
I would definitely remove the timer from those powerheads and look at repositioning them so they create a movement of water from the bottom to the top of the tank. The top of the water should look like this:

You can spend time testing Alk every day if you want, but it probably will take 1-2 weeks to come down to 10.

Yes, the jar sits on the sand leaning against the rock, so the crab cannot crawl back out. The crabs you mention could be the culprits. They may be eating coral because they either cannot get to the snails or they prefer coral right now. When you catch them take a pic and show us so we can tell you for sure.

Imagine this MJ1200 is inside the tank shooting water up to the surface. Two of any brand powerheads at opposite bottom corners of the tank shoot water up diagonally toward the top front surface. One modified MJ1200 on a timer moves water one way for 6 hours and the other way for the next 6 hours. The timer only stays off for a few minutes between cycles. It works and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I think I have a pic of the modified MJ.

Here is the modified MJ1200
