I found this guy and finally cought him so I could get a picture. I am wondering if anyone one knows what type of a crab he is. I have seen him in my tank several times in the last six months he only comes out at night. I am wondering if he may have caused the disaperance of my palyathoa in october. http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=28412&KW=palyathoa&PID=256607#256607 - http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=28412&KW=palyathoa&PID=256607#256607

Throw a polyp in that you would not miss. He might show you. I have a few buttons I would donate to the question.

He is pretty cute. Very nice picture. Let me know if you decide to get rid of him. I will add him to my collection of misfits LOL.

OK I will try tossing a palyathoa in there and see what he does. He is still in the jar in my tank with a metal lid on with holes in the lid. The metal lid wont cause any problems in the tank for a day or two will it?

No metal for me. Maybe you could rubberband some plastic to the top?

Dang that is a cute crab! We have a mystery crab as well that we actually witnessed eating pulsing Xenia. We banished him to the refugium for awhile and sold off all the Xenia. We recently released him back in the tank. I have been watching him and he has so far behaved. He is not cute though. I think if he were cuter I would let him get away with more.

He either eats palys or he has a paly fetish, because after I put one in he hasn't let go of it. My wife and I are deciding what to do with, but if we decide we don't want him someone can come pick him up. We placed all of are zoanthids in our 5 gallon 2 months ago so they woudn't disapear, so we don't have any in that tank anyways. I would kind of like to move them back though so we will see. If we dont want him though we are in Harrisville. (N. Ogden) Thanks

OuchI regret to inform everyone, but the poor little guy died 2 days ago just as I was about to set him loose again. I learned it is not good to keep critters locked up in jars for 3 days. It was either the metal that got to him, but it was only on the lid for 14 hours or so, or I didn't poke enough holes in the plastic wrap that I put over the top.

Sorry you lost the little bugger, he was cute.  Even if he was a pest.  I found a nudi on a frag of zoos (I was a newbie to them) and thought he was SO cute... till he ate them. Angry  He was suddenly much less cute.

The general guide for crabs is in the claws (I don't know if it is true for all crabs, just what I've seen).  Round claws is reef safe.  Sharp pointed (or fuzzy looking body) is not.
If you've ever looked at an emerald crab's claws they have round tips.
