Looking for advise on nano skimmers. For my30 gal finnex. I ordered the tunze nano reef pack skimmer from marine depot. I am thinking I will have to send it back because it wont fit. Any suggestions on best skimmer? I am leaning towards Tunze 9002. But wondering if I should go a different direction.

I have yet to find a true good nano skimmer. The smalles skimmer I have used and actually liked is the asm mini G which is only like a 6 inch diameter base but it still stands somewhat tall for a small tank.

Well nevermind, I guess I am going with the Tunze 9002. I thought the reef pack was the 9002 with a filter pack together. They are seperate so left the filter pack in the bucket and fired up the 9002 last night!

I've herd that Hydor has recently released a nano skimmer. I wanted to try it myself but I've been working my whole house system which should negate the use of a skimmer on my nano.
Here is the link to skimmer on Marine Depot- http://www.marinedepot.com/Hydor_Koralia_Slim_Skim_Internal_Protein_Skimmer_In_Sump_Venturi_Needle_Wheel_Protein_Skimmers-Hydor_USA-HD00771-FIPSISNW-vi.html - http://www.marinedepot.com/Hydor_Koralia_Slim_Skim_Internal_Protein_Skimmer_In_Sump_Venturi_Needle_Wheel_Protein_Skimmers-Hydor_USA-HD00771-FIPSISNW-vi.html

I have the hydor slim nano and it's a beast. It's the best nano I'd used. I got the tunze nano and tried by both side by side and hydor made a lot foam. If you around WVC you can drop by to see it perform. Let me know.

I've been running 2 Tunze 9002's on two systems since they came out, and I STILL am beyond happy with them (they came out like...what...5 years ago or something?). The first version had a horrible holder, but they fixed that in the newer version. My pump also died pretty quick on the first version, but I contacted Tunze, and they replaced it with no questions asked. My second 9002 is the updated version with the magnetic holder, and it works amazingly well. I have to say, they work better (per size) than the Octopus Extreme 250 on my 150g tank.Give it a week to break in. I've noticed that they work a lot better the dirtier they get (not to the point of clogging the pump though of course). The air screw can be tricky, but once you get it adjusted, you shouldn't ever have to adjust it again.

This has been informative. Thanks all for your posts. I looked up the 9002 on marine depot's site and found many other JBJ 28g nano owners who have to do some custom work before making this thing fit. It involves sawing off the magnet on the back of the skimmer body, and in some cases modification of the back middle chamber of the built on sump. I don't know if I'd do that, but maybe when I upgrade to an LED fixture on the tank, that will be a better way of handling the customization.

I found some cone skimmers that aren't too big that are rated for 150 gallons and they are way cheaper then any of the cone skimmers I have seen in the past so I think I am going to try to get some of those for my new frag tanks when I build them. The still need 9.5 by 7 inches for their footprint but for a cone skimmer that's not too bad.

Huh, sorry it doesn't easily fit. If you can find one of the old versions (probably pretty cheap now) then they don't have the magnet. It still has a plastic thing, but it's much smaller (and probably easier to remove). Tell ya what. You buy the new version and I'll trade you my old one.

Here is the hydor slim skim in my nano tank and since the tank is square the skimmer looks like it's not out of place.

I have an SWC HOT skimmer. Works just as well as the SWC 120 I used to have, and the pump is external so you don't have any parts in the tank except for the intake and outlet tubes.
