I want to know if it is ok to put sandstone rock in a reef. I saw Suzy's seahorse tank with it, and I was thinking of putting pieces on the bottom of my new 150 to stack my live rock on and will be in the sand bed and not seen. It gives me two more inches of height of rock in my reef (30 " tall tank), and also gives me more sand than if I were to stack big pieces of rock on the bottom. I love Suzy's seahorse tank! The sandstone is really unique. I wouldn't worry too much if its going to be fish-only or limited amounts of coral. But if your focus is going to be coral then im not sure. If you're not going to see it, maybe just buy some dry base rock or get some cheap LR from people breaking down their tank. Maybe even some Utah aragonite rock. -------------

I would think that we want all the help we can get for our reef aquariums, and Utah rock and sand gives us that help... and it's free. Unless you are going for a unique look I wouldn't do it with sandstone, I'd use all calcium carbonate sand and rock. The tank will have less issues in the long run, IMO.Posted By: Suzy

I just wanted something different.
This is my "Ancient Lake Bonneville" biotope! I'm pretty sure that is what it looked like... But, it won't have all those nooks and crannies where the anaerobic bacterias convert Nitrate to free nitrogen gas. Unless you are planting a lot of plants and macro, you might need those deep, dark crevices to convert your nitrate away... Then, you can get some stinkin' Rowphos to suck out the PO4! |

I wouldnt be too worried about adding sandstone. Ive added silica sand, drift wood, garden soil, and manure to my reef tank  -------------

Thanks for your replies, I have decided to get some Utah rock to stack instead of the sandstone, I don't want any issues in the future with my tank and certainly don't want to put my club membership in jepordy, who else will sit with Rob at the meetings when someone else is banned. ------------- Calvin Johnson 150 in wall reef |
