Topic: 1 WEEK VACA and TANK? Posted: December 26 2011 at 6:31pm |
My tank, 65 Display, 55 Sump, mostly SPS, 1 Coral beauty, 1 Purple Tang, 1 Clown, 2 Green Spotted Puffers,
SO, I will be leaving Sat morning and will be gone for a FULL week......I am sure others with tanks have went on vacations before what do you do with your tanks???
I dose calcium every other day and alk every other..opposite days..so I would have to skip 3-4 dosing...each
How is the "vacation" fish food???
I have a large enough ato reservoir to take care of evap
WHat does everyone suggest?
THANKS!

If your fish eat pellets you could use an auto feeder. I was gone for 9 days for my honeymoon and bought one of those and it worked out great. No losses.

We've gone on several ~week trips with no issues. We've had a friend stop by once or twice just to make sure the tank hadn't busted a seam or something Murphy-lawish, but that's all. We didn't have a high demand fish load, so we never even worried about feeding (plenty of pods and stuff for them to eat.) When we had anthias, we had an auto-feeder...no problems there, but don't fill it crazy full and test it several days in advance to make sure it doesn't dump all at once. How much is your tank dropping daily in alk/mag/ca?

We also vacation frequently. I have an auto feeder (mainly for the trio of Anthias) and everything else on timmers or controllers- including a Calcium Reactor. We have a good friend stop by to double check everything. I think your main concern would be Alk and Ca dropping during that time.

I guess I am most worried about dosing Ca and Alk.......I might pre mix both into separate jugs and see if my Brother can come and just dump a jug in every night.....? I just hate to inconvenience anyone...

Inconvenience anyone?!!! Balderdash. Get a person from Logan that's on this MB to come by and do the caretaking. Every 2-3 days should be fine. Have them meet your brother there so you don't have to give the key to someone you just met in person. Then, when they go on vacation you can return the favor. Believe me, I've seen it way too often, there is nothing worse than leaving your tank in the care of a non-hobbyist. Murphy's law applies. No offense to your brother, but a non-hobbyist has no clue when something is going wrong. I've seen it too many times, even as recent as a month ago right here on this MB.
This is where the rubber meets the road with this hobby. We are a great community helping each other with our tanks. It's not an inconvenience.
I hope that you see this in time.

Completely agree. This hobby is about helping each other out. We've all had tank emergencies...and we've been there for others with their emergencies. And, if you're really worried about inconveniencing someone...a coral frag or a brewski usually will take care of that issue. :)

Could've said it better. I went on vacation for a week last summer and just had a neighbor come check that the lights went off at night and came on every day, plus feed the fish. I came back to a ton of cyanobacteria and algae in the tank from way over feeding. Luckily I was able to save everything and get the outbreaks under control.

My buddy had his non-hobbyist brother watch his fish tank while he was gone for a weekend... His brother thought it was a fresh water tank and decided to do a 40% water change... It got ugly haha..

That reminds me of the very new hobbyist that thought a "water change" meant changing out 100% of the water all at once, The reef tank was completely drained and refilled with fresh water. Did I say "fresh" water? Yep.
