I would use a steel frame and then build wood around it.

This is my dads tank, we built this custom stand and then built the cabinetry around it. I think with a tank that big a metal stand is the best way to go.

We build 300g stands all the time from engineered lumber. The largest was a 850 stand. The important thing is to go quality. Saving a penny on something like this will cause you extreme pain in the future.

Dion just built me a stand for my 400 and I can't express how pleased I am with it. I was originally going to do a powder coated stand and build around it, but I'm glad I went this way.  If you want to come take a look at mine and see the quality you can. It's very impressive.
