I'm glad it is working out and that the casualties were few. Do you have an automatic top-off for your water?

The salinity fluctuation can be hard on the inhabitants too.

Time to buy an RO unit. I have my fans connected to the timer for my lights. That might help your problems. I kept forgetting to turn the fan off at night and it would get down to the low 70's.

I don't turn my fan off at night and I'm sure that my temp must drop a few degrees. I've never had a problem with it though. Doesn't the ocean get a little colder at night?

Perhaps I would be better at basket weaving. . . at least it would be cheaper!

I don't think the ocean temps fluctuate as much as our tanks do. I bet that most of the temperatures in the reef are determined by the water currents and not direct sunlight.

3 gallons in a 90 isn't enough to make any trouble salinity wise. I put as much as 20 gallons top off at a time in my 150 at my office.
Keeping the lights on for fewer hours in the summer may also help the temp problems.
My water stays pretty warm in the summer, but not enough to be a problem. With 4 tanks that have high powered lights on them in one room the room gets incredible warm though.

Using Scott's calculators on the GARF site; assuming 100lb live rock & 3" sandbed the total water volume is 70 gallons. Assume a starting salinity of 1.023 3 gallons of evaporation changes the salinity to 1.0241 adding that water back in all at once would change the salinity from 1.024 to 1.023 in a matter of minutes. I would not want to subject my tank to that.

with the summer heat and the heat of my MH and a fan running, i add 2 gallons to my tank every evening and have had no problems at all. the tank is about 78 in the evening and 75 in the morning. i have my thermo set at 75 and the air on all night. the house stays a constant 73 in the day and 69 at night.24/7 skimmer and 24/7 sump 18 w helio. i run 1 18 w helio atinic all night long. the water swing is from 1.024 to 1.025
just thought id take the time to share.

You're right. I updated the post so there's no confusion. My brain must have started working backwards again.

Interesting Mike, I didn't know that calculator even existed.
So what is the change on my 150, that probably has 120 of water in actually in it, when I add 20 gallons of water? Say there is 100 gallons at 1.026 and I add 20 gallons to make it a total of 120 gallons. Now what is the salinity at? I've done this for years with no obvious ill effects.
Great now you've got me thinking. See what you've done?

Will .. if youg SG is 1.026 than you add 20 gallons .. it changes your SG to 1.022 ... thats a HUGE jump ... I would be looking at a auto topoff of some kind ...
Thats assuming that your total water volume is 120 gallons .. and you are adding 20 gallons for topoff a day (seems like a lot of topoff though) your SG before adding 20 gallons is 1.026 .. after adding 20 gallons of topoff water its at 1.022

Steve is right on with those calculations. Things aren't supposed to live through that especially on a regular basis are they? Maybe you have the corals that SeaBase is looking for!

Will, I just looked at this again. If it evaporates down to 100 gallons and reads 1.026 then adding 20 gallons brings it to 1.0213
