You will not need to sand it between coats if your base sanding is good. For a glass look it would need to be lacquered with a black optitoner and finished with a "Good" quality lacquer. Several coats total with lots of sanding.

    Author: bfessler
Subject: 32477
Posted: April 07 2009 at 8:14am

There are a number of porducts that you can apply to the wood that will hold up well around salt water. Spar Varnish is definately durable but if you are doing it yourself is has a very strong odor. I would not recommend using laquer around moisture. My favorite product is McKloskies (probabibly butchered the spelling) Diamond Coat. This is a water based polyurathane. It has low odor and is very durrable. It comes in a variety of sheens. I would recommend one step up from flat and use an egg shell or satin finish. This will make the wood a little easier to clean but still give the matt look you desire.
