A single 250W MH could be placed 12-20 inches above the tank.
The coral would stay where they are, just start the light at 2 feet above the tank.
There is a thing we call "light acclimation". Without light acclimation, coral can get sunburned and easily die. It involves starting with the light higher, then gradually increasing the photoperiod and lowering the light.
