Jackie every time I see pictures of your tank I think of what a sweet wave you could make with that rock work and the peninsula style. I'd set a power head on either side of the rock work and do 10 min on one side and 10 min on the other. If the noise is bad just up it to 1 hour on each side. I agree with Snowsrfr. That's how it is in the wild, yet many expert hobbyists have noted that alternating linear flow does the job and is easy to create.
In each tank, some experimentation is necessary. You can tell within a week if a coral likes where it's placed.

I have a large Birdsnest colony that was brown 3 months ago when I got it from Nick801. It's turning a nice pink in the sun.

SPS, in general, benefit from random flow, and not so much direct flow.

As far as the original question, in general, SPS are a high light coral, and with 400W you should be able to place them them most anywhere you want. As with any coral, there are always exceptions and you may find yourself adjusting SPS frags up or down to get the color they originally were, etc. I always ask what kind of lighting the coral came from, height in tank, flow, etc. when I'm buying corals/frags from fellow reefers.

In my tank with T5's I have SPS anywhere from the top (3" from surface), all the way to a couple inches off the sand bed. The flow does not have to be all that fast.
I am growing SPS frags in a 40 gal tank with one single MJ1200 Poorman's Wavemaker under a 150W 15K MH.

I'm wondering where the best placement would be for all my sps frags. I have a 75g tank with a 400 w metal halide.
Also I know they like more flow so I plan to keep them in the one half of my tank as the flow is a lot better there than at the other end seems this is set up peninsula style.
