Author: Mark Peterson
Subject: 69799
Posted: February 21 2014 at 7:59pm

Years ago, it was noticed by a few hobbyists that their skimmers produce a little more foam in the twilight hours of dawn and dusk so it was suggested to consider shutting down the skimmer during the day. Skimmers have improved greatly since then.

I can see why a very experienced old time hobbyist like this owner might make the statement he made. Still, if a decent skimmer is going to be used, shutting it down even half of the time would be detrimental for two reasons I can think of:
- cyclic fluctuation in pollution levels;
- an unforeseen pollution emergency could crash the tank.

Emergencies aside, skimmerless tanks are very beautiful in their own way. They typically have larger microbial, micro-invert and useful algae populations in relation to the same tank with a skimmer. They can also keep good coral but cannot support as many [polluting] fish.

Aloha,
Mark

Edited by Mark Peterson - February 21 2014 at 8:10pm

Simply ludicrous. Keep the neck and inside of the collection cup clean and your skimmer will continue to work like a champ- everyday!
