Author: Mark Peterson
Subject: 70518
Posted: March 28 2014 at 10:55am

That's right, the old 50/50 blue-white PC tubes washed out color. The hobby never caught on to that until the manufacturers of t5 lighting were smart enough to make pink/purple/magenta tubes, similar to the plant grow tubes commonly thought of as only good for freshwater planted tanks. For over 10 years I have been using the Helios brand blue-pink PC tubes that do make colors POP. The future of reef aquarium lighting is LED's. The LED lighting industry has begun to recognize the advantage of using some red, pink and purple LED's in their fixtures.

This in place of this created this:

That above was not as blue as I would have liked it but it was way better than the blue-white tube. I have some of the smaller Helios blue-pink PC tubes if you would like to try one.

Aloha,
Mark
808-345-1049 call/text/visit anytime
Author: Firefish
Subject: 70518
Posted: March 27 2014 at 6:24pm

So I have noticed an interest in magenta lighting. I've been out of the loop for a while and I want to know all about this. Can anyone tell me about them?

I have a 5 gallon tank with a blue and a white and blue stunner strip (two 6watt stunners total) for lighting. Corals are really liking it and this combination casts a more natural look to the lighting in the aquarium. I don't think many SPS would do quite so well as the light intensity may not be quite enough. I'm wondering if adding a magenta light will raise the PAR enough for SPS and add just a little more to make the colors of the corals pop.

Any opinions would be great.
