+1 on LaJolla. Check out the off shore kelp forest that you can swim out to. La Jolla Underwater Park and Ecological Reserve! Great place, but remember the water is cold. My family and I are going to San Diego for a week, and will staying on Mission Bay.

2 Questions:  
Anyone know of any great snorkeling locations in the Mission Bay Area?
Where is the best place to purchase the snorkeling gear?

This will be my first time snorkeling any tips would be appreciated as well.
