Use the water after the water softener as this will dramatically increase the life of your membrane.
Yes you can hang it on a stud. They are not very heavy. Just takes 2 screws to mount it on the wall.
I don't think you could run the 1/4 tubing through the ceiling (probably create to much back pressure) but may be if you piped it into some 1/2" pvc and made sure it was slanted downhill it might work.
You can drain the water down any drain but you might want to be creative and find another use for the waste water like for you washing machine, watering plants etc. In the summertime I have my waste plumbed outside to a garbage can so I can water the dry spots on my lawn.

I need your help. I am finishing our basement. We are going to put some tanks down there. I've only started framing thus far, but I can't stop getting excited about the tank part! . I've got the "roughed in" parts for a bathroom. I think I've got the drain part conceived in my brain, but I need help with the water IN part. When I get to the plumber part, I will need help. What sorta set up will I need for the RO unit? I need IN for 2 sinks, a toilet and a shower and the RO. Since the ceiling is not finished ,(Hell, there's no walls!) can I just plumb a cold water line to the RO? Can it's drain just flow to the drain where the water softner goes? Does the RO unit sit on a shelve or is it too heavy and must sit on the floor? Can I just hang it on a stud? Can I route the outflow of the RO across the basement to the other side so I can access the water in a different room than where it's made? Thanks ahead of time......
