Topic: Aqua Clear vs Marineland Posted: October 20 2006 at 5:39pm |
I'm staring up my new 29 gal, and I'm planning on using and HOB filter. In a previous post I mentioned that I was looking into getting an Marineland Penguine Bio Wheel, but was told to check out Aqua Clear. I was wondering if anyone else has opinions on which one is better, or if there is an HOB that is better than both of them.
Thanks in advance,
Tim

I am not a fan of HOB filters either, but if you want one, I have TWO Aquaclear 500's and you are welcome to one for the cost of shipping it up to you from St. George so you can give it a try.....

An Aquaclear 500 on a 29 gallon tank might work pretty good. It is almost like having a HOB Sump actually. You could also make a HOB Refugium out of it for that size tank.
The reason I have them is that a friend was sold them as the filration for his 125 gallon reef, LMAO LMAO, that was quite a joke.... The LFS that did that should be quite ashamed of themselves.
But I do see how they might work well for a small system...

Aquaclear is definitely better IMO. Use the cleanable filter sponge and make up a bag of AC to sit in the compartment on top of the sponge. Much better design, and better quality, IMO. It does not have to be large either. I have the small one on my 29 and it works great. After all, it's purpose is to remove particluates and house the AC. The reefs main filtration is in the LS, LR, Algae and LW. Feel free to come check it out and pick up some valuable reefkeeping tips while you are here.

WOW , Tim is very new to the hobby... his interests in his profile are listed like this.......
Guitars, Music, Movies, My Wife :), Scuba Diving, Golf and Fish
His youth really shows. I have been married for almost 30 years, and would never dream of listing my wife 4th..... LMAO after all, she controls how much money I can put into my hobby.... LMAO But notice his REEF is not even really listed yet..... Soon it will be number one.... or two if he wises up and puts the wife at number one... LOL He does get some credit for the smile by Wife though....

Good point, I better change her to number one, after all if it wasn't for my wife I wouldn't even be setting up my first reef tank
