Topic: Aquariums in Las Vegas ?? Posted: December 31 2003 at 3:53pm |
Hey all,
I'm leaving for Las Vegas for a soccer tournament (not me, my son) anyway, which casinos have cool fish displays? We will have some free time and I would love to check out some fish stuff while I'm there. Any suggestions??
Also, any other fish things I should do while I'm in the area? Cool shops? Recommended seafood buffets? ???

If you see nothing else you have to see the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay. It is at the extreme south end of the strip next to the Luxor.
It is well worth the $15 or so to see it. Every time I go to Vegas I spend at least 4 hours there. When I'm rich one day I'm going to build a 1.8 million gallon aqaurium like they have.
The Mirage has a cool tank behind the check in counter that you can view for free as well.

Caesar's Palace also has a big one. Its a little hard to find. Look for the CheeseCake Factory...its right next to it.

I say skip all the aquatic attractions. Get yourself over to Texas Station for the world's best all you can eat buffet. Last couple trips I made to Vegas I didn't visit a single aquarium. Actually I visited houses with aquariums in the vegas club but that doesn't count.
Nothing beats that buffet!

Are there any true reef displays in the LV casinos? Aren't they mostly, if not all, fake backgrounds/coral?

Yes Mark, They are all (at least to my knowledge,) fake backgrounds. The reasons you get from most of the people in charge of them is that:
- It is too costly to provide light to live corals in those big tanks. (As if they haven't already spend exorbitant amounts of money.)
- It would be irresponsible of them to harvest that much coral from the reefs. (So "Grow your own reef" as you say. Be a part of the solution and not the problem. Again, probably too much money involved in growing their own.)
- Many of their fish are not "reef safe" and real corals would become food.
These are they answers I have been given in the past anyway. There are probably more reasons such as, "It's just easier this way."

I have heard that there are not many "good" LFS in Vegas. Maybe that has to do with the fact that there are not many reefs.

ooh ooh ooh I just thought of one. Instead of visiting tanks, you should check out Tenecor and some of the other acrylic producers. Vegas is a hot spot for tank manufacturing and it is pretty cool to see what projects they are putting together for people.
