    Posted: February 13 2011 at 3:08am
So after all the debate I had with myself I went ahead and went with a t5 fixture it has 4X54W and I want to trade out the bulbs for ATI ones. My question is I saw a tank the other day that had a 6 bulb fixture that I loved the coloring, here is what bulbs she had:
2 blue plus
2 aqua blue special
1 420 actinic
1 purple

So to get about the same coloring should I just do one of each of those? I loved her coloring but I don't want too much blue.
She suggested going with:
1 of each but that it would be on the bluer side and if I wanted it a bit whiter to not get the special and get a white but I am not sure which bulb is the white? Looking at the colors I would have thought the special was the closest to white seems it is about 12k.

Any help would be appreciated.

Leave out the aquablues and just do blue plus IMO. The aquablue wash everything out.

The aqua blue special is the white bulb...it is about 12k. The purple bulbs are not too far off from the aqua blue bulbs in spectrum, I belive they just have all the green removed. Which helps with making reds pop.

I like my tanks on the blue side so I can't be too much help on bulb picking for a lesser K...but I think for what you are going for I would choose about a 50/50 setup, so 3 blues and 3 white/purple... so along the lines of 2 blue+,1actinic, 3 purple...or.... 3 blue+ 2 purple, 1 aqua blue. If you plan on using the actinic I have heard from a couple people it makes the tank with a 6 bulb fixture look a little "dark".

When it comes down to bulb choices for me I always have ordered in a couple extra bulbs to find that perfect color that I want. But if you have already found a tank you like copy that. But you do have to relize that differnt fixtures will make the same bulbs look differnt. So an ATI, will look differnt then a coralife, odysea, and glow... etc etc etc

oh sorry, you have a 4 bulb fixture....go with either 12k: 2blue+, 1 purple,1aquablue. Or you can take out the aquablue for another purple.... for a 20k tank use 3 blue+, and eithe aquablue or purple....

I guess I should have said I like my blue to be right around 14-15k, the 20k is too blue for me.

2 Blue Plus, 1 Purple Plus and 1 Aquablue.

My bet is that after 2 to 3 months you hate how white it is and will want to change the Aquablue for another Blue Plus. Colors will look better uner 3 Blues and a Purple.

Ryan's combo would be best for ya....also, you will be surprised how much you can change the look and viewing color of your tank just by bulb order....so have fun with trying things out...

if you have the money, it doesn't hurt to get a couple extra bulbs to play with, then you could likely sell the spare on here....possibly to me :)

If you may be interested in an actinic bulb (super pop) go with UVL super Actinic: Reason= most par for an actinic

I would also grab an extra blue plus to play around with in case the you want a bluer look...
