Sad day, my beloved Bangaii has died!

My question is can adding corals affect fish (especially this one?) I have a toadstool leather that has not done well since I added it and a couple days after the cardinal got sick and died a couple of days later. Everything else in my tank is doing well and chem. levels seem to be ok.

Can any corals be toxic or in some other way affect fish?

I am so sad about my Bangaii. He was one of my favorites. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm sorry to hear about your Bangaii Cardinal they are beautiful fish. Adding the toadstool to your tank, even if it is not doing well, did not kill your fish or make it sick.

Thanks. I didn't think so either, but it just seemed strange and nothing has changed. I have a healthy blue tang and other fish as well as gonipora and other corals which are all fine. It just didn't make sense.

I disagree. Sarcophyton / Mushroom or Toadstool Leather Coral have some very potent toxins. I once observed that some Hermit Crabs left in a bowl of water where a Sarco was cut for frags were found dead only minutes later. A fish that was unkowingly on the edge of health because of some other stressfull circumstance, like an unknown bacterial or viral infection, could easily die. How long had you had the Bangaii?

And just how "bad" was the Sarco doing. Was it dissolving away or just shrunken and not expanding?

And to answer your original question "Can adding coral kill fish?" the answer is yes. It only takes a small amount of water, even just a wet coral (corals also have water inside) to spread a fish pathogen. Ich can travel this way.

I had the bangaii for a little over a week. He seemed to be doing well and displaying "typical" behavior for the species. The toadstool was shrivelled up and dark in color but not disintegrating. The base of the leather broke off after a couple days being rubber banded to the rock (maybe too tight?) and every once in a while will extend its polyps but only partially for a short time.
The cardinal went from normal behavior to sick (slowed swimming, on its side) in about 2 days and died in another 2.

I am still mourning the loss and my wife is too (it was her favorite fish).

Was the Bangaii captive bred or wild caught?

IME, bangaii cardinals do not ship well. I'm guessing the LFSs lose 10 for every 1 that make it. They may look fine, but within a week will die. Buying captive bred will avoid this.

I wish I knew. That was something I read about AFTER i bought him (of course) from Aquatica. I will be sure to ask next time. I am hoping to find someone who has bred them (it seems as though they have quite a lot of offspring.)

A new batch is in the oven. It's been 2 weeks and the Male still has a mouthful. That's a good sign.

Actually Ian, Cardinals have relatively few offspring in each clutch. 10-40 is typical. Other marine fish, Clownfish for example can lay as many as 500 eggs.

I would love to see pictures of the little guys when they leave the safety of daddy's jaws. I am also interested in replacing my bangaii if possible. Thanks.

I've talked to Carrie (hopes that the right spelling) fr Fish4You and she's was telling me that they don't carry the cardinals for that reason. . . they are wild caught and don't ship well.

She was pleased to know that mine was from tank-raised (which is hard to do apparently so, "GO MARK!!")

Here's a pic of the lil' guy I got from Mark:

I can't wait to see the next batch, Mark!!

I guess I got a bit off topic there... sorry.
A similar thing happened to me. Some time ago I bought a Bengaii from a LFS; it seemed "lonely". Three days later I bought two more for a school. By the end of the week the first one had died. Over the next week, the other two died. It made no sense.
I concluded that when I do Bengaiis again I was going to get them from known source (i.e. known to be tank-raised or had been in a tank for a while).
Recently I was in the same LFS and saw some more Bengaiis in a tank and sure enough, one was lying dead on the bottom.
hmmmmm..

Way to go Sukie!

Mine are both captive bred. A while back we had a member that was having great success with Bangaiis. There for a while everyone had captive bred bangaiis. In fact, he stopped rearing the fry because there was no demand for them.

But, that was then  - now we have Mark (and a new demand).

I also have a candinal from mark, and it is doing great have had him for around 3 months. I would recommend a tank raised as well.
