I have a Medical Infusion pump that I bought online and now it has problems. When I turn it on it beeps at me with an error code. So after some calls I found out that the error code could mean a bad battery.

So next I took apart the pump looking for the battery and I eventually found a 12V 2 Amp battery. So using a voltage meter I tested it and it tested as putting out 4.47 volts. Next I called the company that made the battery and they said that it was probably bad and needs to be replaced.

My only concern is that a new battery costs 25 bucks (as much as the pump cost me). So this is my question. Since it is a 12v battery I have a car battery charger that will charge 12v car batteries. Its lowest amp setting is 10 amps though. So should I try and rig of this battery to the charger and try and charge it for a couple of minutes or is this a really bad idea?

Disadvantages
1. The battery could explode.
-- to counter this I will be well away from it while charging
2. ???

Advantages -- If it works then I don't have to buy a new battery. If it doesn't work then I have to buy a new battery anyways.

So should I try it or just say forget it and buy a new battery.

I would err on the side of caution on this one if it were me.

OR see if you can find some one that has a 2 amp charger that you could borrow.

Have you thought about short circuting your pump?  I wonder if that would be a better way to procede?  are you actually going to be using the batery power on the pump, or is it going to be plugged in all the time?

Truthfully I could care less about the battery. I have no use for it. If the power shuts off then I am more than happy to reset it, no big deal. I just don't know if it is possible to shortcircuit it.

The pump is a medical grade IV pump that is meant to beep at any sign of trouble. It even has something to detect that the battery is low. How would I go about getting around that? Plus it refuses to run if the battery is low.

Also, I don't think it is possible to bypass the main circuit board because of the pumps design. It has to be controlled.
