Topic: Beautiful anemone at Petco in Ogden Posted: March 30 2015 at 9:18pm |
There's a green carpet anemone that I think is a gigantea. Top corner tank and it looks ok still, but it will go downhill soon I'm sure. Someone save it and give it a good home. Needs high light, high flow like acropora.

4153 south riverdale road. There are two green carpets. The one on the right has shorter tentacles so it might be a haddoni. The one on the left looks like the pictures I've seen of a gigantea but I could be wrong. Tentacles all of the same length, about 3/4" long, and a few of them did the slight twiitchy movement that giganteas do. I couldn't see the foot of either of them. Mouths look fairly tight. Couldn't tell if the foot was attached. They are under very little light and flow. I think 39.99 for the price.

I typically avoid Petco fish and inverts like the plague, but if Steve says there is a chance at saving this anemone, I'd go get it, if I were closer.

Petco's attention to Saltwater livestock is shameful

Thanks for the compliment Mark. I'm not an anemone expert but I follow "OrionN", and other anemone masters on reefcentral. There have been more success stories with gigantea carpets lately because of a quarantine technique they have developed. Rarely, a gigantea carpet will arrive healthy and no quarantine is needed. However, it has to be put in a good environment quickly after arriving in the U.S.
Giganteas suffer more from shipping (stagnant water Is the trouble I'd guess) than other anemones and usually develop an internal bacterial infection. This always kills the anemone if untreated. If they are infected and they are quarantined before being put in the display and treated with the antibiotics Cipro or Septa, the infection can sometimes be cleared up. It's still difficult to cure them, even for the experts, so getting a fully/mostly healthy gigantea is a rare prize. I would have bought it yesterday if my tank was up and running.
This is OrionN's criteria for judging a gigantea and quarantine/antibiotic procedure. I hope it's OK to post a link. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2271385
According to people on reefcentral, Petco bought a large shipment of giganteas a few weeks ago and they have been showing up all over the U.S. They don't know what they are doing but by dumb luck they seem to have acquired a bunch of healthy anemones.

Well I went to Petco and pick it up however I'm not 100% sold that it is a s. gigantea . Only time will tell if the tentacles get longer it is looking pretty healthy and we will see how it goes

is a great pickup with its dark green. But agree with you that it is haddoni. Are you going to try an antibiotic treatment?

Thanks for the rescue, even if it's a haddoni. Was the one you got in the tank left of the corner or the tank right of the corner. I inspected the one left of the corner more because it had longer tentacles. Now that I think back, that one had ball shaped ends on the tentacles like a haddoni but the tentacles definitely moved on their own and I thought that was only a gigantea trait. Sorry if I misled you. Have you looked at the underside to see the verrucae?
