Topic: best BUDGET return pump- Rio HF or ViaAqua? Posted: May 18 2010 at 4:43am |

So I broke the shaft on my return pump, and need a new one. However I cannot spend much AT ALL!!
What would you suggest? The tank is a 45 tall with a 20G sump, but it runs a 3/4 return to a tee, and two 1/2 returns from there. My last pump claimed 850 GPH, and didnt move a ton of water in the tank.
I spent an hour reading reviews online, and they seem pretty evenly matched. The ViaAqua had a bit less bad reviews though
Rio hyperflow 14HF-- $55 on Aquacave. 850GPH
ViaAqua 3600-- $55 on drfostersmith.com. 1057GPH
ViaAqua 2600-- $40 on drfostersmith.com 740GPH

You should find out how many head feet of pressure there will be for the pump to push against and then pick the pump with the most capacity to handle that pressure. Even if you're old pump was advertised at 850gph, even at 6hf of pressure you can lose up to half of your flow rate.

I have a rio 14hf on my 60 and it is still quite a bit of flow and best part is the aquarium stocks them and they are maybe 5 bucks more then thru that online place... only part that is loud is when it hits the side of the sump and vibarates

I agree with the above post for the quiet one, they are great pumps. You can go on petsmart.com and print out a sale price, and go to the store and they will match it. You can probably get one for $40 that does what you need it to do.

Trust me I looked into the quiet one pumps and nobody has a very great deal on them. If I was going to spend $100 I would get a mag drive.

Sorry, apparently they have gone up in price since I bought mine. Did you search marinedepot and foster and smith to see if they had any deals going right now?

the via aqua will get you by in a pinch i went through two of them in 4 years on my 90. the 3600 was great but loud , I up graded three and a half years later to a higher end via aqua modle paid a $100 dollars for lasted six months . The 3600 showed signs of rusting after three years on the impeller the higher end modle warped the impeller after two months . couldnt contact for warranty though.

aquatraders.com has some really cheap ones.... My buddy is running one with no problems. I know they have a bad rep. But if they work good for you who cares.
