Topic: Best return pump Posted: December 06 2009 at 3:03pm |
What has everyone found to be a good external retun pump. I have a reeflo snapper that is on its last leg and I need to repace it. Marinedepot has the snapper for $305. Is there a better pump out there that is as good for a better price (2500 gph). I have a 120 gal tank.
Thanks Don

I can't speak to it being "The Best" because it's the only external I've used for Saltwater (have used many for fresh) but my Iwaki Mag Drive has been running without a hiccup for 4 years.....of course I'm knocking on wood as I type this. Hope I didn't just jinx myself!

Reeflo is the best brand IMO. Iwaki pumps do last a long time, but they are expensive to run, very inefficient. I would go with a reeflo dart, it is a little better pump, especially with the baldor motor, and I believe it is the same flow rate.
You never want to skimp on your return pump. It is one of the highest demanding pieces of equipment in terms of electricity because it runs 24/7. Go with the best/most efficient and get a reeflo.

The dart is the same price and has a better gph at 3500. Does marine depot have the best price at $305 and free shipping?

I run a Dolphin 3000/4000 amp master on my 235 and it's been running pretty good. We had to remove it last year and get it fixed up but that was after 3 1/2 years of running. Marine Depot sells the amp masters from $250-$400.

dolphin pumps are really good too. they are very efficient as well, but cant really handle much head. So if you are pumping to a tank with a lot of head, like me, it doesn't quite fit the bill.
if you are considering another pump, you might consider combining with your skimmer pump, depending on what type of skimmer you are running. for me i was able to replace my return pump for the display, the return pump on the frag tanks, the feed pump on the skimmer, and 2 recirc pumps on the skimmer, with one reeflo barracuda. ended up saving me a bunch every month in electricity.

It makes a rattling noise every 15 seconds or so that lasts only 1 or 2 seconds. The pump is only 2 1/2 years old. Thought I would take it off, replace it with a new one then get it fixed for a back up.

The real question that needs to be asked is how many feet up are you going to be pushing water. What size pipe? Any elbows, tees, etc. ? Do you want to use the pump for water flow or just a return from your sump? You can get a lot cheaper water flow using in tank pumps and just use the pump for returning your water. If you don't like the look of powerheads and want to use the pump for water movement how many gallons of water do you want to use? These will make a BIG factor on what type and size of pump to buy. Your pump can be your #1 user of electricity on your tank and possibly in your house. I put as much time choosing a pump as I do anything else on my tank. Here is a little spreadsheet I made that may help. Feel free to add/change it as necessary. http://spreadsheets.google.com/a/coralplanet.com/ccc?key=0At4O8TZpJ4pLcGFWZng1Y1ZhVmZBY1IyUl9uREhGWHc&hl=en

I have been looking at the reflo 18 snapper for $239 (free shipping). Has anyone tried this pump or know anything about it? Does anyone sell it local?
