What makes you consider getting rid of him?

If you have not noticed anything odd I would not be overly concerned. They are for the most part very benificial to your tank. The issue is that if it is a bristle worm it can sting you if you touch it. I have one in my tank that is about 6 inches in length and have not had any problems, so I wouldn't be overly concerned.

If you search the message board you will find a previous thread about this.
I would only remove him if you notice he is eating something in your tank you want to keep.
Almost always they are a great asset to your tank.

I have a ton of bristle worms in my tank. One of them (who lives in a particular rock) is able to stretch out to over 10" long, and still be in the rock. He keeps his rock clean of large amounts of nuisance algea, and he doesn't bother any of the fish or corals.

Was that in there yesterday? Casper--WY windier than ?

Isn't it usually it is fireworm that are the ones that will attack fish. I know that there is supposed to be a difference, but can anyone else tell what it is??

Fireworm and Bristle worm can/are used interchangeably.

My opinion is that they get into clams that are dieing. This next line is morbid so you may want to put your hands over your eyes to read this. Bristleworms can smell death because they eat dead stuff!
I wonder if they also "see dead people"
That was a freaky show that caught me totally by surprise!
Connie, did you make a temp check yesterday? How is everything looking? I haven't seen the Fungia since taking it away. I'll let you know later if it looks any better.

So what would a bristle worm actually whisper?
a) I see dead people
b) I smell dead people
c) I eat dead people

d) All of the above
e) letter b followed by a, followed by c.
Fireworms (at least the ones I saw while diving in Malta) are very different from the bristle worms I see in my tank. The fireworms were cherry red and white. Fat bodies with bristles mostly along the top. I'm sure I only saw that one species.
My theory with my tank is to try to maintain balance. I have apstasia (sp?) but only 2 of them. I keep waiting for the peppermint shrimp to become gainfully employed, but he likes the fish food better. I hopefully have 3 other peppermint shrimp, but they are sneaky or dead. I say live & let live with your bristle worms. Just my thought.

Okay, I can see that it's time for my story here. This is from an older Sea Star issue that isn't online.
ATTACK OF THE BRISTLEWORMS
The aquarium looks great. Honey, lets be romantic and cuddle as we sit here in the fading glow of the aquarium lights. As the lights fade, the fish seem to change. As darkness falls, they get skittish and head for cover. It's almost as though something is out there. Something ominous and foreboding. Look, the night has come and the fish are slowing and they slip out of sight. Sleep envelops them. All grows quiet. Only the gentle splashing of water breaks the stillness. Ummm..cuddling is nice.
!!What was that..! That... that thing! It's coming out of that rock there on the bottom. What is it? What is it doing? As we stare wide eyed and nervous at this hideous creature emerging from underneath the rock. Where's the flashlight?
Look! It's like a spiny, fuzzy worm. A red body but a white, fuzzy, spiny, hair like covering along it's sides. Look out! Here comes one swimming though the water. It's coming towards us! What will it do? It's scary. It looks gross. Should we catch it?
Don't touch it. It looks dangerous. It may bite or it may be poisonous. Will it bite and kill the fish? But they are asleep and defenseless... Hurry, we must do something to save the fish and what about the corals? Surely nothing is safe with these monstrous creatures around. We must tear down the tank and destroy them all. But what if they attack?
