    Posted: January 20 2016 at 5:32pm
I have just installed a water softener, and and RO, and plumbed it to my icemaker, and fridgidare fridge.
My icemaker makes ice, but i don't get good flow from fridge water tap.  I do how ever from my sink spigot.
I test my water with a TDS meter, and found the RO out sink is a 3 consistantly.  Out my soft water tap at my sink is a 180.  Out of my fridge, was 50.  So I changed out my filter (40$) charcoal insert type.  I get very high readings, and after lots of flushing, it never went below 90.  Question:  Do I need a booster pump to force the water through the charcoal filter correctly, or does the TDS measure the charcoal element leaking?

I'm not sure if I understand. RO water should have a TDS of 0-10
What is the TDS of the source water from the tap?
The TDS of the purified water coming directly out of the RO unit?
Does the purified water line go directly to a sink faucet and to the refrigerator?
Is there an expansion tank connected in the RO purified water line?
Can you show a pic of the RO unit?

I've used RO water for delicious drinking water and for awesome clear delicious ice. It needs no additional treatment. No need for a carbon cartridge after the RO unit.

Aloha,
Mark  Hug

P.S.

Something is not right with that setup. Do you have a pressure canister to feed the ice maker and the drinking water from the fridge? It should go just past your RO unit and before the water inlet before the fridge. I have one for our ice maker and it works well. I turn it off when I make aquarium RO/DI water and it still makes ice, but the cubes are very small. My canister puts out about 50 lbs.

It depends on what your water pressure is. You don't need much pressure to filter though a carbon filter, Its the RO membrane that needs pressure. If your getting 50 tds you need to change the RO membrane.

Like I said, I feed the fridge with 3 TDS from my RO, but it has an internal charcoal filter, that needs flushing when new.  it's the push and lock type.  downstream of it, my TDS is like I said, much worse than source water.  I don't know how to either bypass it, or use a pump to be able to  flush enough through it to get decent water

Like I said, when using RO water, that internal charcoal filter is unnecessary and in your case is just causing trouble. The fridge manufacturer intended it for removing the bad taste of city tap water but it's not needed when the water is already purified and bad taste was removed by the RO unit. They make "dummy" filters(no charcoal inside) to fit that Frigidaire where the owner, like you, does not need or want the charcoal/carbon filter.

Again I ask, regarding slow flow at the fridge water tap, is there an expansion tank that supplies pressurized RO water to the fridge? If so, maybe the valve at the fridge is partially closed, restricting water flow?

Hey all y'all, what is it about people from Texas? Wink

Aloha,
Mark  Hug

Where can I get one of these "dummy" filters, and yes there is an expansion tank.   If that's what this bladder tank is under the sink.  No gauges to see what the pressure is, but the spigot comes out with very good flow, unlike the tap at the fridge.   It's a brand new set up, but contractor is a moron
No valve restricting flow, but flow is low, just like yours with the small ice cubes.
Are you really from Utah?  I heard it's beautiful up there.
Why would a charcoal filter add solids to the water?  Because that's what is happening
Thanks, Mark

There should be a schrader valve on the tank to pump it up to provide the pressure you need. Doesn't take much pressure on it to make it work. You can check it with a tire gauge. Yes, I'm really from Utah (most of the time).

The line for your fridge needs to come from after the bladder tank and not before. Moving that connection will solve your problem.

Cool.

I'd check around, maybe call and ask a local appliance parts/repair place to find out what's possibly restricting flow out of the fridge faucet. There is probably a flow restrictor or a pressure reducing valve, meant to keep the faucet from shooting a hard stream of water at +60 psi city water pressure.

I'd also return the defective carbon/charcoal cartridge for a refund. Like you said, it's not supposed to release carbon dust.

Aloha,
Mark  Hug

So how does a Texan find a Utah fish club forum and find out about filters?

Usually those filters are for improving the taste of the water with very little purification. This means it adds minerals to the water for taste.

Depending on how long the line is from the pressurized tank to the fridge, and from the RO membrane to the tank, your psi may be too low to provide a lot of consistant flow.
