Hi,
Can I use bio-pelltets on my fresh water Koi pond? Please share your experience or your thoughts if you've tried it before.
Thanks.

I couldn't see why not. Bio Pellets are a carbon source for bacteria. This helps those bacteria prosper and they then denitrify the water. So as long as there is denitrifying bacteria in the pond, it should work. Maybe others have tried it, I have not on my pond but would be interested to know how it works.

depending on the size you would need a ton of pellets and a very large reactor.

It's not a large pond. 125 gal only but the algae is killing me. I do more water change for the koi pond than my 75 gal reef tank.
Is it safe for the koi fish?
Thanks.

125 Gallons is very small for a koi pond. Mine is about 1500 gallons and is not very big. Here is a link to a pond calculator. Typically you use one cup of bio pellets per 50 gallons, so if it truly is only 125 gallons you wouldn't have to use very much. On my pond I use Algaefix, Ecofix, and a Barley Powder (all by Pondcare) and it keeps my koi pond clean. I have about 20 koi, cat tails, and water lillies, so its safe for both fish and plants. We always battled algae in the pond as well until we used these chemicals.

I used to get algae really bad in my pond as well, until I started using a UV sterilizer along with the barley extracts. I have 3 turtles and 3 ducks in mine and it's only about 2000 gallons. I would have plants in mine but the animals tend to eat everything I toss in there.

Thanks for all your inputs. After using the calculation website, my pond is around 190 gal. Really really small compare to your ponds. I have 4 koi fish (between 6" - 12") in there. I had them since they were about 3". I will try the Algaefix or Ecofix, or Barley Powder. I will do more research. Any recommendation for a 190 gal pond?
Again, thank you.
