I have a 15 gallon that's been up for over a year.  It has a nice deep sand bed and I'm thinking about getting a scoop of it and a scoop of sand from another reefer and tossing it into the sump of my new 30 gallon.

My 15 is overrun (read: oh-verr-RUN) with aiptasia.  If I scoop up some sand that doesn't have any aiptasia on it, is there any way aiptasia can be transported?  Do they have spores that just float around everywhere?

Also, is anyone in Logan willing to let me scoop out a cup tonight?  Call me/PM me if you can.

chris,
did you drill the 30?   You can have some of my sand however, it is a very new system and you may want more life than what I have. I plan on doing a 5g water change on Friday if you also want live water. let me know.

I wouldn't chance it myself. I would get 2 or 3 donations of a cup or two of live sand from tanks that have no known problems.

Trey:

I drilled the 30 gallon, things are running.  I haven't put a canopy on, nor have I put a light on the refugium.  That reminds me...  I need to bring you your bit.  I might just take some sand off you when I do that.

I'm looking for something teeming with life without any aiptasia.  Peppermint shrimp are such hit and miss, as are everything else that hunt it.  I also really don't want to chase down every single stalk with limewater and a syringe.

I guess I also need some macro algae.

Unless.........
I did toss two dead shrimp in there.  I know this helps facilitate the cycle, but is that all that's necessary?  I know sand from someone else's tank is beneficial, but is it necessary?

Chris,

It is not necessary to get some LS or LW from someone else.  It just speeds up the process!  You can also add a ton of green water to help the process along a little faster too!

As far as the risks of bringing the aptasia over to your new tank.  I would chance it.

I would chance it.  Aiptasia is a weed coral, yes, I don't know if I'd call it a pest, it does move, but not that fast that I've seen.  When I think of pests, I think of something I'd like to drop an anvil on.  It's not as visually unappealing as, say, bubble algae, and both can be handled with the right crew on board (again, in my short and brief experience.)  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, anyway.

Aiptasia happens, and for a long time we (Sukie and I) stayed away from it like it was the plague.  Guess what?  We got it anyway.  We got a pair of peppermint shrimp and haven't seen a stalk of it since.

Once I added Peppermint Shrimp to my tank--I have not seen it!  ANYWHERE!  In fact---I am so impressed with how quickly it dissappeared!  YEAH!

Quote I don't know if I'd call it a pest

I would.  :)

Hmmm.  Two peppermint shrimp success stories.

Where'd you get the shrimp?  How many did you get?  How many aiptasia were in the tank before you added the shrimp?  Did you feed the peppermint shrimp, or did you starve them into eating the aiptasia?  How big the tank?  How old was the tank?

Hey, what's wrong with bubble algae?

Chris, I have also had success with peppermint shrimp eating aptasia.  I bought more than one though because I've heard that not all of them eat it.  It may just be the luck of the draw.  But, if you get two or more, they will have babies in your tank and then you have continuous live food going into your tank.

We've great success with our peppermint shrimp. We love 'em, plus they are cute!  We've never had a problem with aptasia (SP?), but we got the shrimp anyway.  I don't know if they keep it out or not, I'm guessing they do, but we really like 'em.

Amie,

How many could safely go in a 30 gallon?  I'd really like to have a peppermint shrimp in there.

I recently added 8 to my 24 gallon nano. It was covered with aiptasia. I looked yesterday and could only find one large anemone. It may be that this one is too large for them.
When they get large enough to worry about (the shrimp) I will remove a couple to another tank.

BTW, I also have a skunk cleaner in this tank as well. You can't have too many shrimp!

Wow.

I can't believe so many of you have had success stories.  I guess the key is to add several shrimp, eh?  :)

Thanks for the information.

Shane, I bet if you let the shrimps get hungry, then feed that big aiptasia, they will take care of it for you...
