I hope everyone has been enjoying their free fish food. I just wanted to give my food tips and tricks and also the recipe for anyone who wants more or just wants to try making their own food.
I bought my food from the Asian supermarket. I was able to make a large batch (enough to feed my 2 tanks for months for about $60). I looked for raw foods without additional additives.
In my recipe I used:
whole squid (remove beak and guts)
octopus
baby clam
smelt
small scallop
raw shrimp
krill
oyster
nori
garlic extract
Blend or chop to desired texture and freeze.

I tend to not use many shells in my food, the fish don't eat the larger pieces and they end up being waste.
When first blending the food it came out looking like a paste. I was a little worried, testing the food in the tank as a paste did not go well. Once the paste was frozen and then re-thawed in a little water, it broke apart beautifully.
Use various sizes of ice cube trays to get individual size chunks of food. Or you can use some egg crate on a pan. Spread the food into the egg crate and freeze. Once frozen you should be able to push out small cubes of food.
You can use your favorite flakes and pellets in your homemade food for additional nutrition.
If you have a large predator fish, consider hand chopping foods in small pieces to satisfy your larger predator fish.
Have fun when making your own food, try different ingredients and see what your fish go for. Try different sizes of food as well, your fish might surprise you in what they go after.
A cheese grater works well for getting smaller bits of food. Make sure the item is frozen solid before grating.
Fishy smell on your hands....use a fresh lemon or lime and rub the pulp all over your hands to get rid of the fishy smell.
Thanks again for everyone coming out to the Iron Chef meeting. It was a lot of fun competing. Congratulations to Bob!
