Topic: Cleaner vs. Peppermint Posted: October 17 2006 at 6:41pm |
Can I put cleaner shrimp and peppermint shrimp together in a 75 gal? I want the peppermint for aiptasia, but I also want a cleaner shrimp to clean my fish. So will they get along if I introduce them at the same time?

Someone might chime in and tell you otherwise, but from the stories I've heard they shouldn't have any problems at all and you have a good sized tank as well.

They will be fine as long as you don't have a hawkfish .

I have fireshrimp, peppermint and cleaner all in the same tank and they get along fine. They each have their space and don't intrude on the others.

Can a pistol shrimp and a cleaner shrimp co-exist?

Yes they can. We had a cleaner, two peppermint and a pistol shrimp in a 24g nano with no problems

Quick question (warning I'm really new, so this may be a really stupid question...)
Now that you've been warned, I have a question about cleaner shrimp... Is a cleaner shrimp a specific type of shrimp, or is it a name for a group of shrimp. I ask this because I was reading on drfostersmith.com about different types or shrimp and they refer to scarlet skunk shrimp, peppermint shrimp, blood red fire shrimp, and the coral banded shrimp as all being members of the "Cleaner Family" Are certain shrimp better than others at cleaning fish, if so which ones are the best???
Thanks

Actually a very good question.
Those shrimp will all "clean." But when we say cleaner shrimp we really mean one specific type ( Lysmata amboinensis). It cleans the best if you want to look at it that way. (although Jake claims that fire shrimp actually do more cleaning)

Wow! You know you're on a good Message Board when you ask a question, and the next day when you check it, the conversation has gone on without you! When I said "cleaner shrimp" I was referring to the skunk shrimp. I know that they almost all clean in some way, but that one is best for cleaning the fish. Well, I guess I will be getting a few different kinds now! I don't have much aiptasia now, but I figure it's soon to come because I saw one yesterday. I just want to stay ahead of it!

Quick question, how long should I have my tank up and running before I ad a cleaner shrimp. Also, I have read that it is necessary to ad iodine to promote proper molting. Is that something that I can purchase at an LFS?
Thanks again,

Shrimp are very hearty (I always go back and forth between hearty and hardy) once acclimated and situated, however they are very intolerant of high nitrates (that's what I'm waiting for on my tank, otherwise I would've added (2) shrimp by now). Make sure that you have 0 ammonia and as close to 0 nitrites and <10 Nitrates and you should be set. It's tough to say an exact timeline because depending on your setup a 1-week old tank could have the same parameters as a 2-month old tank. Just do tests and make sure your numbers are in line. What shrimp are you thinking of getting?

It's not so much NECESSARY to add iodine, but they do need it to shed or "molt". I think that if you have a healthy mature aquarium, there should be no need to add it, but if you haven't had your tank up for very long then it probably wouldn't hurt to add it if you have a shrimp. Yes, you can get it at your LFS, but I wouldn't buy a very big bottle if I were you because you won't end up needing all of it.

Thanks for answering my questions!
Izzy, I want to get either a cleaner or a coral banded (just because I think they look the coolest) and my wife really wants me to get a blood red fire shrimp, she saw one at Aquatica and thought it was the coolest thing ever. So we'll see, I still have quite a bit of work to do before buying any shrimp, but I'm getting closer!

I think the blood red fire shrimp is a really cool looking shrimp too! The only thing about them though, is that you don't see them much because they like to hide, they aren't very sociable. You'll know he's there because you can see his antenna but he won't hardly come out. IME But cleaner shrimp are very sociable and they will even clean your hand when you are doing stuff in the tank!
