QuoteReplyTopic: Cleaning Maxima clam out of water Posted: June 11 2012 at 9:32am
I have 2 clams that I would like to clean in order to transfer to my bigger tank. My question is can I take them out an scrub the mantle for a few minutes. I've read online that it should be fine to take them out of water for about 5 minutes but I wanted to get more opinions before doing so.thanks.
Just remember to 'burp' them when you put them back in your tank. Roll them around, upside down right size up all over, in order to clear out any trapped air.
Thanks that's great advice! I'll he sure to burp them after. I'm exited to get this aptasia and hair algae off them. They've been neglected way too long.
Clams can be out of the water a lot longer than 5 minutes. I understand that the method of artificial spawning requires that they be out of the water for about a half hour.
I had a clam spawn after it was partially out of the water during transport and moving from tank to bucket to tank.
If they close up tight they can be toothbrushed and rinsed under the kitchen faucet without any harm coming to them!

Sweet, I was thinking about squirting Hyrogen Perixide on the shell once it closes up tightly. I'll see if I can get all of it off with a toothbrush first but It would be nice to kill the algae on the sides.
