Is there a significant difference/advantage to using a deep sand bed over just live rock in a refugium.  I have one that is 9" X 20" with a 3-4" sand bed and then live rock on top and some chaeto.  I was thinking of getting rid of the sandbed all together and just pack it with live rock and live rock rubble.  The pods would probably do better in the live rock.  Is there a big advantage to having the sand too?  The main tank has sand but only 1-2" maybe a little more in places.

I personally like a sandbed in a refugium. A deep sendbed helps reduce nitrates. Would removing the sandbed free up that much room for more rock?

i have no sand in my display and a deep sand bed in the refugium with a couple rubble rocks, macro, and TONS of pods. if there arent predators they will crawl everywhere. they dont need rock. they crawl on the sand, your macro, and on the sides.

I have a DSB in my fuge and never have nitrates. I have not tested this long term yet but so far it's looking good.

I like a DSB in the refugium and lots of Chaeto. I never had a nitrate or algae problem this way.

Hmmm, I guess the sandbed can stay.  It would double the live rock in the sump.  I'll just rearrange things a bit and see what I can do.
