California's waters are always a bit cold. But, with a good wetsuit I'd check out La Jolla cove in San Diego. Gharabaldi damsels, cool kelp gardens, and sea lions darting about. Plus you can check out Scripps Aquarium while you're there. Oregon's almost out of the question without a dry suit.

Most of the California coast is cold and rugged. I hear Catalina Island off the coast of Los Angeles is good.

I would suggest La Jolla Cove as well, the kelp forests are something you have to experience, it’s like swimming along these giant trees(kelp), that stretch from the sea floor to the surface of the water.

But it is very cold!!

Just charter a boat, There is a ton of good diving in california, try www.diveboat.com or www.diving.net  I have and do dive both of those on a regular basis for lobster and pleasure (I go again in a couple weeks). just take a 7m suit you will be fine.

My son and I snorkelled in La Jolla two years ago this June. The weather was a bit over cast, but the water wasn't that cold. We didn't have wet suits and we were disappointed to leave after several hours. Facinating stuff to see even being completely inexperienced and in Southern Califonia.

You guys are a bunch of shivering wimps ! J/K.

I moved from Northern California a year and a half a ago. I lived near enough to the ocean that some weeks I would dive 3 or 4 times. Both scuba and free diving. I loved to go abalone diving especially up around Mendocino and the Sonoma Coast around Fort Ross. Beautiful diving, kelp forest diving was my favorite, just like flying through an underwater forest. Catalina and around Monterey was some of my favorite diving, a lot to see. Angel sharks, Rays, lobster or bugs as we called em.

Be careful in the Late summer though especially when free diving, a lot of kelp growth is hanging on top of the water, can get tricky. It can grow up to a foot a day in the right conditions. One of my favorite experieces was diving around Monterey with sea otters swimming past you. Also the sea lions and harbor seals can make your diving very interesting. If you have any questions give me a call I can let you know of a few specific on where some good dive shops and locations are. That is the one thing I miss the most about living in Cali. Did'nt have to have a SW tank, had a pretty big one close by. Yozhik/Ryan

I've been PADI  certified for a year now and have yet to take it out for an ocean trial. Maybe we all need to plan a trip with the experienced divers showing us little guys the "cool" stuff?
