Radio Shack is going to be your first stop for resistors, I have never
had a problem finidng the ratings that I need there. The LEDs
that you want might be there. A few years ago they didnt have the
ulrabrite blue in larger sizes, but they had a normal blue that was
actually quite nice. Ultrabrites have become really popular since
then, so they might have a bigger selection by now. If you would
like I can scavenge my link list for online sources too. Good
Luck!
Edit:
Hup...Jon beat me to the punch on online...I have bought stuff at digikey too. Good place.

I've made moon lights before, it's just not worth getting all the parts separate, just get something like this:
http://autolumination.com/fixtures.htm
and a 12v adapter from the DI and you'll be done in minuets for less then $8 shipped. That unit has a built in resistor and is even water proof.

yup, but shipping would kill you...
Since this is in the DIY forum you can get LEDs for under a dollar and resistors for like a dime each (probably less). Power supply from Deseret Industries for $0.50. A little wire and your set!

I get my LEDs from http://www.superbrightleds.com. They have tons of wavelenghts and different sizes of spots (the area it fills when pointed straight down). I usually pick up my resistors at Radio Shack, but have been lessed than pleased with the varity in resistance capacities. I know there's a electronics store on 3rd west (somewhere) that has tons and tons and tons of resisters...but I've only been once...it's overwhelming.

I purchased some awesome LED's for DIY moonlights from www.lc-led.com. The exact link to those LEDs is http://www.lc-led.com/View/itemNumber/94. I then picked up the needed resistors at Radio Shack.

Gonzo, Are you thinking of Ra-Elco on 2780 So. Main? That is one awesome store for electronics DIYers. It's one of those old type stores (name probably stands for Radio-Electronics Co.) that has boxes of new and used electronic parts overflowing their shelves. I'm sure there are other stores as well.
Gosh, I've tried to turn off my tanks moonlight, but just can't reach the source Guess I'll just have to wait for a new moon
