Topic: Fat lip???? Posted: May 31 2005 at 9:20pm |
Why would several clownfish get what appears to be a severe underbite?
We bought two ocillaris clowns that appeared healthy but within a week,
they both got a fat lip, quit eating, and died. Now, a tomato clown
that has been in the tank for 2-3 months has the same thing. WHAT IS
IT??? Can we save it? Is there something we can do to stop it from
spreading to the other fish? They haven't been fighting at all, so it
couldn't be from locking lips. Any other options?

Perplexing. I've never seen it before. Could it be an irritation from that anemone? Could it be a disease? A cold sore that turns lethal? I don't know.

Thanks for the response Mark. The first two clowns that died didn't go
near the anenome. Could it be from food? What medications would be good
to treat with in a hospital tank. Is there anything that might possibly
be helpful? Copper? I've never treated anything before, so I don't know
what's good. Antibiotics? What might help? I read flatworms are
poisonous to fish, and I've noticed a few white/clear flatworms in the
refugium. Could flatworms cause this if eaten? Would the clowns eat
them? None of the other fish seem affected . . . yet.

Clownfish have unique problems. Jake knows a lot about medicating fish. Personally, I'd just wait a while after the last one dies before trying clownfish again.

I had a fish who really hated his reflection. You could hear him ramming the glass from four feet away. Gave him a good fat lip, didn't kill him though (the reflection won:)
